Her only album Liital was groundbreaking in the history of Senegalese music because it was the first commercial recording to feature a traditional female taasukat performing to the modern accompaniment of mbalax, Senegal's quintessential pop genre. The distinctive style is captured in all it's ear-popping, left-field glory on the recording, which was massively popular upon it's release. Diop's powerful chants and incantations above urgent female chorus, cross-rhythmic blasts of the sabar and tama drums, as well as synthesizers, drum machines, hand claps, tambourine jingles and horse and train engine samples. When Aby Ngana Diop died unexpectedly on July 4, 1997, the country mourned her passing, but continued to celebrate her music. Although this cassette has caught the attention of some African music aficianados who have stumbled upon it in recent years, it remains largely unknown to the wider world. Hopefully this re-release from Awesome Tapes from Africa will change that. Echeverr√≠a's first year with the label was a great success, with his eponymous debut LP containing his biggest hit, the self-penned cumbia party anthem 'Amaneciendo'. The following year, working again with the Fuentes hit production team of Isaac Villanueva and Hern√°n Colorado, Echeverr√≠a came out with 'Sabroso Bacalao', sharing the vocals with Freddy Cruz and Manuel Cassiani. As with the first album, in addition to some hot, driving hardcore salsa tracks like 'Mi Viejo Barrio' and 'Perd√≥name', Echeverr√≠a made sure to include his beloved tasty indigenous cumbia and porro. In addition, the cut 'Llorando Por Ti' is in the Afro-Cuban oriza rhythm style, while 'Locura Es Mi Cumbel√©' is described as a 'cumbel√©' (inspired by The New Swing Sextet's 1970 song 'Cum Cumbele', which is a variant on the bomba, an Afro-Puerto Rican folkloric drum-based genre). As the title (and humorous cover) suggest, the majority of selections on the record are in the salsa genre that was gaining steam at the time in South America. After the release, he sent us some more songs, which we loved just as much. Soon after, the idea was born to follow up with a full-length release which Ahmed was happy to commit to. In early 2023, we met in person in Cairo to share a few more stories and to take some photos for the release, which you can find throughout the booklet accompanying the LP and CD. The lead-off single is the stellar rhythms of \"Yarait\". Ahmed creates a singular sound that's inspired as much by the Jamaican sonics as it is by Libyan folkloric styles, and the rap-refrain will have you singing along by the song's end, a perfect track for the warmer spring\/summer days. Second single is the upbeat slammer \"Aziz O Adda.\" It's hard not to feel happy when the horn refrain comes in, followed by the anthemic vocals that make you want to dance out into the street, a dancefloor sureshot for any party, especially the tropical outdoor variety. Third single is \"Ya Ta'ebha,\" a bass-heavy reggae slammer if there ever was one - with stabbing pianos and synths, deep bass, and a hip hop influenced head-nodding percussive rhythm, rounded out with a stunning guitar solo - the track will surely be on loop as you bounce down the block. Introduction: I still remember the first time I heard Ahmed Malek. It was 2012. Back then I didn't know much about Arabic music, but I was about to leave Berlin for a couple of weeks to go to Tunisia. I was working as a project manager for a music recoding session which ended up being released by Jakarta Records as the \"Sawtuha\" release. I knew I would have some time off during my stay and I was certain that I would dedicate some of this time to diggin. I asked some people whether they knew of any titles that I should look for. Roskow, who also ended up re-mastering this release, told me about an Algerian composer called Ahmed Malek whose music was also released in Tunisia. Fast forward three years: Arabic records have become my number one hobby and luckily I got my hands on a copy of Ahmed Malek's \"Musique Originale de Films\" album. I already knew some of the tracks but listening to the music the way it was originally released, and not as a crappy Youtube version, made me fall in love with Malek's compositions all the more. It manages to create this very special mood: melancholic and reflective, emotional and touching, but never depressing. Even without having seen any of the pictures created for this, it immediately brings visuals to one's imagination. Around that time I became captivated with the idea of reissuing some of Ahmed Malek's music. I knew some people had tried to locate his family but, but with no success. In the end it was an incredible amount of luck that made it possible for you to read these words and listen to this record. I had a DJ gig in Beirut playing old Arabic records and I mentioned my passion for Ahmed Malek's music to a friend. She said she knew one person in Algier, and as much as it would be a shot in the dark, she could ask her if she had an idea of how to find Malek's family. Two weeks went by before I heard back, and what I got was incredibly good news. Her Algerian friend was the neighbor of Ahmed Malek's daughter! I'm not a spiritual person, but it felt like the universe wanted to see this release happen. At the start of the 1970s Airto was invited to join Miles Davis groundbreaking electric group, which with albums such as the seminal Bitches Brew helping Davis regain his title from John Coltrane as the most important jazz artist of all time. Two years later Airto helped establish two of the most important jazz fusion groups of all time: Weather Report, with Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul and Miroslav Vituous; and Return to Forever, with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Flora Purim. Airto Moreira also began his solo career in the USA in 1970, and alongside his wife, the singer Flora Purim, and Brazilian artists such as Hermeto Pascoal, Sivuca, Deodato, Raul de Souza, Azymuth, all played a major part in the Latinised sound of American jazz fusion throughout the 1970s. By this time Airto established himself in the USA in the 1970s, he had already had a formidable career back in Brazil in the 1960s as an important figure in the Bossa Nova movement, which soon after spread throughout the world. Airto played in a number of important groups during this time Quarteto Novo Sambalanco Trio and Sambrassa Trio (all of with Hermeto Pascoal) which proved to be three of the most ground-breaking groups of this era. The album Samba de Flora, including the seminal jazz dance title track, is a masterpiece of jazz and Brazilian fusion and features Airto Moreira alongside Flora Purim, fellow Brazilian artist Raul de Souza and heavyweight USA jazz musicians Alphonso Johnson, percussionist Don Alias (from Stone Alliance), Cuban conga player Cachete and Argentinian pianist Jorge Dalto. The album was originally released on the small independent Montuno Record label (which was run out of the unassuming Record Mart record store situated in the Times Square underground subway station!) and has been unavailable for many, many years. This totally unclassifiable (and, by the way, exceedingly rare) album was no mere blend of rock and jazz influences. Instead, Seeds on the Ground was truly a fusion, an ecstatic melding of bossa nova, psychedelic rock, Brazilian folk, Latin jazz, free jazz, and what we call nowadays 'world music.' If that sounds a bit calculated or intimidating, it's not; what makes this album so compelling is how organic and intimate it all sounds. It became apparent that it was time to start looking for other formats. Cassette tapes were the obvious alternative. These were introduced in the arabic world around the late 1970s. In some countries they took over a bit earlier, in others a bit later, but eventually they pushed the vinyl format out of the market in the 1980s. In Egypt this trend already even started in the late 1970s. Al Massrieen was one of the first bands I learned about once I discovered the tape format for myself. They were really popular in Egypt in the 1970s and the more of their music I found on either tapes or Arabic pirate mp3 sites, the more I was becoming a fan. Only very few bands from the region can match the band's versatility as well as their strive for innovation. Hany Shenoda is the man behind the Al Massrieen band. He is a reknown figure of the Egyptian music scene and has worked with everyone from Abdel Halim Hafez to Mohamed Mounir. Al Massrieen was his attempt to introduce his ideas of modernizing Egyptian music, heavily encouraged by Naguib Mahfouz (Egypt's only winner of the Nobel Price for literature) after discussing his ideas with him. Al Massrieen's sound goes from lush disco like \"Sah\" to psych rock like \"Horreya\" or incredible jazz fused pop on songs such as \"Ebda Men Gedid\". I was shocked to realize the band seemed to be hardly known outside Egypt, even though I feel they're at least on the same level as Ahmed Fakroun. An relative obscurity which I largely attribute to the fact that their releases never have been pressed on vinyl (apart from a Greece best of LP which wasn't a strong compilation of the group's songs). One way or another it felt like this band and especially their composer, band leader and overall brain Hany Shenoda was in need to get some recognition outside of Egypt. The release is fully licensed from the band and comes with an extensive booklet with liner notes, interviews and unseen photos. Exotic third-stream jazz conceived by a visionary composer whose virtuosic technique and deeply emotive guitar playing defined his two earlier and now legendary 1969 UK jazz albums Integration and Hum Dono with Joe Harriott, both recorded for the much-celebrated Lansdowne label. Also recorded in 1972 although not released at the time was Konkan Dance, an unofficial sequel to Dream Sequence that further explored the uncharted possibilities of an Indian music-jazz fusion. Featuring many of the same personnel, this session also included support from Don Rendell and Alan Branscombe, two giants of the UK jazz scene who add serious credentials to D'Silva's singular and intimate compositions. For reasons unknown, the album was canceled by Lansdowne at the time and never saw the light of day until being resurrected again in the 2000s. The Roundtable is pleased to once again showcase this important artist and present a new addition to this incredible and almost forgotten piece of the Amancio d'Silva story. Pressed on 180g vinyl and packaged in a custom 1960s-style flip-back sleeve. In late-'50's Dakar, Senegal, producer Ibra Kasse; and his Miami nightclub spearheaded a movement blending the Cuban styles of son montuno and patchanga with local folk traditions. Through the unique cultural fusion of West African and Caribbean influences, Latin music took on a new and unique sound, brought a breath of fresh air into Dakar's nightlife, and attracted numerous musicians from surrounding countries. One of the musicians who answered this call was percussionist and singer Amara Toure;, from Guinea-Conakry. In 1958, Kasse; invited Toure; to join Le Star Band de Dakar, led by Mady Konate;, a group that was immensely important for the development of Senegalese modern music. Toure;'s talent on percussion was undeniable, but it was his raw, powerful voice and his interpretations of Cuban music that captivated the producer. In 1968, after ten years with the Star Band, Toure; headed to Cameroon and formed the Black and White ensemble, with which he performed live through the late '60's and early '70's and released three singles between 1973 and 1976. These singles, included as the first six songs on this compilation, fully epitomize and distill the essence of what Toure; had learned during his career. His Mandingue roots fused with the Senegalese sound that he had mastered - the perfect foundation for his Cuban interpretations. In 1980 Toure; went to Libreville, Gabon, to team up with the powerful Orchestre Massako, with which he recorded Accompagne Par L'Orchestre Massako. This LP has since gained a reputation as one of the very best African albums, and it's complete contents are included here as the compilation's last four tracks. These ten treasures, representing Toure;'s complete discography, have been carefully remastered from original session tapes and vinyl records, and are reissued here for the first time. After the release of his LP in 1980, Toure; seems to have disappeared. Apparently he was last seen in Cameroon but his whereabouts are unknown at the time of this release.
