This session was recorded for BETHLEHEM in NYC during October, 1957 and featured the winners and runners-up in the Downbeat magazine jazz poll of that year.
The collective personnel included Art Farmer(trumpet, tracks 1,3,5 & 7); Donald Byrd(trumpet, tracks 2,4,6 & 8); Frank Rehak(trombone, tracks 2,4,6 & 8); Gene Quill(alto sax, track 2); John Coltrane(tenor sax, tracks 2,4,6 & 8); Al Cohn(baritone sax, tracks 2,4,6 & 8); Rolf Kuhn(clarinet, tracks 1,3,5 & 7); Freddie Green(guitar, track 2); Kenny Burrell(guitar, tracks 1,3,5 & 7); Eddie Costa(piano, tracks 2,4 6-8); Eddie Costa(vibes, tracks, 1,3 & 5); Oscar Pettiford(bass); Ed Thigpen(drums, tracks1, 3-8); Philly Joe Jones(drums, track 2).
With arrangements by Harry Tubbs and plenty of fine solos on eight seldom played standards, 'Winner's Circle' is an enjoyable modern jazz album and probably the least-known one involving John Coltrane.
